Did you know that more than one-third of the U.S. population or about 79 million Americans are obese? And every year, millions of people all over the world die because of obese-related conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, abnormal blood fats, and cancer.
As Christians, we have the responsibility to take care of ourselves and maintain our physical health. Our health is very important in making our lives count and improving our relationship with God. Here are the reasons why you should start thinking about your physical health now and start doing something to get healthy and physically fit.
- Your body belongs to God. Never say, “Well, it’s my hair, so I’ll do whatever I want to do with it,” or “It’s my stomach, I’ll eat whatever I want,” or “It’s my mouth, so I’ll say whatever I want to say.” Remember, your body is not your property, it’s God’s property. He created it and He paid for it when Jesus died on the cross for your sins. Every part of you is God’s belongings – every strand of hair, every piece of cell, every fiber, and every type of tissue. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own…” So learn to respect and take care of your body.
- Your body is a tool to do God’s work. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, createdin Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Your body was created with a purpose – and that’s to honor Him and fulfill His will. So God wants you to be healthy and physically fit in order to be better equipped in serving Him and doing what He intends you to do. The healthier you are, the more energy you will have; and therefore, the more you can do for God’s Kingdom.
- Your body is God’s temple. Your physical health is very important to God because your body is so precious to Him. In fact, that’s where He lives. In 1 Corinthians 3:16, God says that your body is His temple and the Holy Spirit lives in you, so you should take care, respect, and love it, just like what you do in your own home. When you don’t take care of your body, you’re like destroying God’s home.
Caring for your body is not just a physical issue, it’s also a spiritual issue. If God is important to you, you will take care and respect your body as it is His home and property.
